I don't have a good reference for it, but the TV news reports
seem to suggest that the U.S. Senate voted unanimously to
support the current Pledge of Allegiance.

Extropians in the U.S. should be writing rather harsh
letters to their representatives asking them precisely
what evidence there is that we are "under god" and/or
why we should pledge allegiance to a nation that believes
in a potentially ficticious entity.

I've read Daniel's comments regarding the problem with
loyalty oaths. I don't have a problem with declaring
loyalty to a group that generally promotes my survival.
Particularly if the group from time to time operates
on principles of an "open society" and "rational thinking".
The fact that a court in the U.S. would look at the pledge
from a "rational" perspective and find flaws with it
gives me hope. To me it seems that reciting or not
reciting such an oath in the U.S. is probably much
better situation than the alternatives that would be
available in Zimbabwe.
