That's a perfectly reasonable correlation, but conventional
wisdom has the causality messed up. It's being troubled/
friendless/ less capable/ etc. that causes (relatively)
low self-esteem. Self-esteem is IMO obviously a feedback
system; people want self-esteem, self-esteem goes up by
improving yourself, so people want to improve themselves.
Insofar as that system gets disrupted and self-esteem goes
up or down for reasons other than performance, the affected
people will improve themselves less and be less than they
could.
