Emotional misery (was:overcoming...)

Bit more clarity now : )
I contend that emotional misery can outweigh physical misery every time;
in fact I believe it is the emotion in painful circumstances that makes
pain feel so bad. Morphine changes the emotion, and changes the
perception of the pain; you can still feel it, but somehow you don't
care. People can train themselves not to feel pain. I believe this is
accomplished by turning off the emotional response, not the pain receptors.
What thinkest thou?
