I suspect that my case is rather common among early
followers of Rand. I read Atlas Shrugged at 12 in
1960, after years of reading hundreds of SF novels. I
had been brought up in the typical altruist, Christian
family environment, with the typically neurotic
mystical, authoritarian parents, and all I got at
school or church or thru the media was more of the
same.

If I dared mention Ayn Rand at school - Junior High,
High School, College - the reaction from the reps of
the educational establishment was the same
contemptuous dismissal. Statism, mysticism, atruism
were the keywords of the time philosophically. Ayn
Rand was the one loud, clear, coherent, passionate,
and (usually) reasonable voice challenging that whole
evil hegemony. Naturally, I worshipped her. And I am
the better for her being there.
