I believe I saw a news item that indicated the 747 was one
of the oldest in the China airlines fleet and was only
a month away from "retirement".

It could be a structural stress issue if the plane had been
flown a lot between China/Taiwan -- like the Aloha(?)
plane that lost a section of its fuselage that I think
was eventually blamed on age and the large number of
takeoffs and landings while flying between the Hawaiian
islands.
