In most of this discussion it seems like IT refers only to
software.
I'm going to suggest you look for a program that gets you a CCNA
certification, essentially this means learning Cisco's IOS software
and working with switches and routers.
Not only do I think you will enjoy this, but you should have little
problem finding a job, and coupled with your software skills makes
a very formitable combination. Do a job search on looking for
CCNA's.
You should be able to find a "bootcamp" program that gets you this
in a couple of weeks.
