California governor

There was an article in this morning's SJ Merc about how Davis is
bordering on 50% disapproval according to the latest polls, yet his
Republican opponent this fall is faring even worse. Time for an
indie, tech-savvy candidate to step in? It'd have to be someone with
the popularity of Jesse Ventura, but perhaps someone can suggest
someone. Certainly, a particularly outspoken critic of California's
mishandlings of various tech bits (though maybe tone down the tech
vs. entertainment brawl: Hollywood is in California, too) might be able
to build up sufficient popularity between now and campaign season, if
said person were media-friendly enough.

(One possibility: "I promise to make all my decisions in the open, with
as much publically available documentation on the Web as possible. That
way, when - not if - I do screw up big, media analysts will have all the
ammunition they need to tell me *exactly* how I messed up, and to make a
spectacle of it. Which is good: chances are, that'll force the mistakes
to be corrected as soon as possible. Yeah, it'll probably spike your
ratings a bit, but I'm not *trying* to feed you bones like this. Wink,
wink, nudge, nudge, knowhatImean?")

The usual tactic of absorbing any good ideas from indies so as to
marginalize them might not be effective in this case. The incumbent
has proven ineffective, so history will deny any further promises of
his. ("Yeah, he *says* he'll do it. Do you believe him? I, at least,
don't have a history of doing otherwise in office.") The opponent is
sufficiently beholden to conservatives that the kinds of changes our
candidate might propose would be impossible for him to embrace very
openly, lest he lose what backing he has.
