Greetings:
Are these ultra-capacitors commercially available, and if so, from where?
Or even just research prototypes would be fine. Any info you could forward
along is highly appreciated.

Charles, If you go to www.matweb.com (a good source for information on
materials) and look up 'aerogel' they will provide a link to suppliers.

Here is the main supplier for silica aerogels and carbon aerogels they list

http://www.mkt-intl.com/

They also have RF aerogels and new alumina aerogels

http://www.mkt-intl.com/aerogels/index.html

You can get carbon aerogel papers (the ones good for ultra capacitors) on
this page

http://www.mkt-intl.com/aerogels/aerogel_order.html (scroll to bottom)

They are sold as paper like sheets 3.5" x 10". 5 sheets go for $100 US

Their chart says it all!

Properties of Carbon Aerogel Available Ranges
Density 0.3 - 1.0 g/cm3
Surface Area, BET 400-1200 m2/g (1200 m^2 !!!!!!)
Average Pore Size 0.5 nm
Compressive Modulus 3000 psi*
Electrical Resistivity 0.010 - 0.040 ohm-cm*
Capacitance 30 F/g* (30 F/g !!!)
Thermal Conductivity 0.4 W/m/°K*
Gas Permeability 4.86x10-12
Color black

You should be able to get two paper sheets and roll them into a cylinder
with a dialectric sandwiched between them and make a good ultra cap.

Hope that helps.
