I always thought it was meant to symbolize the fertile crescent
area of north Africa. Just goes to show that one can read many
meanings into a symbol after-the fact, regardless of what its
origins might be, so I'm sure someone will concoct different
stories about the meaning of the simley face, some of which will
undoubtedly be derogatory.
