I wouldn't be so hard on Trygve myself: at least in the US, support by
loonies actually increases the acceptance of things by the public, if
not by the scientific community--but who cares about them anyway? It's
public acceptance that will get the money flowing, and scientists will
change their tune when research grants are involved.
By I /would/ like to have seen a press release along these lines:
"The French, who, like many Europeans, look down their nose at us
primitive Americans because we still execute criminals, is about to
destroy two of its innocent citizens..."
