Agree with Miriam on this point (but also - from the depths of my inner
polymath child - agree with much of what Russell Evermore wrote). In order
to make a successful commercial movie that will appeal to a multitude of
people, one has to relate it to the lot of them. I saw AI from my own
transhumanist-materialistic (aah, long-ago-jaded) eyes, but I also saw it
from my grandchildren's eyes, and my coworkers' eyes. If nothing else, a
movie like AI is valuable in giving inspiration to discussion - old subjects
with new spins, as well as totally new subjects and new perspectives. How
to get people to stand up and listen? = "Let's talk!"
Similarly, I was disappointed with Contact - it wussed out, IMO. But it was
a successful commercial movie, which not only portrayed an atheist (count
the movies on one hand with an atheist as the main character)... but an
atheist who actually didn't end up needing a lobotomy (remember "Frances?").
Julian Simon? Most people have neither heard of Julian Sands nor Paul
Simon, much less Julian Simon.
I read this somewhere recently ... something about how we live in a society
that has never made a movie about Leonardo da Vinci, but has produced three
movies about Joe Buttafucco.
