"Extropes,
If you haven't already done so, do a google search on
sonoluminescence. Then check it out. The first hit
is as good a place as any to start:"
Extropians generally interested in fusion technology may want to do a google
search on "Philo T Farnsworth" (Inventor of the television) and "Fusion"
Philo, along with Hirsch, invented what they called 'intertial electrostatic
confinement' This table top reactor used electrostatic charges to
accerlerate protons toward the center of a wire grid sphere, where they were
attracted by a negetive center terminal of the sphere. Apparently
Farnsworth claimed to have reached break even, and could reliably do it.
Hirsch (who is now a big player in the current US fusion program) claimed
that there were two many losses. In either case, One can easily build a
table top apparatus capable of attaining a fusion reaction (thought not self
sustaining)

(this page has a picture of the device in operation)
The Fusor is a vaccum chamber device invented by Philo T. Farnsworth in the
1950's. An acceleration voltage (several kV) and the geometry of the
electrodes cause so-called ion multipacting, and in this case concentration
of accelerated ions in a small focus. This is called Inertial Electrostatic
Confinement (IEC). Using deuterium gas and high vaccum and acceleration
voltage, energy in this focus becomes high enough to make fusion possible,
resulting in a measurable flux of neutrons. The system is currently being
(re-)examined by George Miley of the Univ. of Illonois. Have a look at other
links, too.
