First I've heard of that convention- the trouble is, I've seen a lot of
people who simply use lower case all the time. When I reply offlist, I
often put [offlist reply] at the top of the message. If informing
friends about goings-on at work that I really don't want broadcast, I
make a note to that effect.

Engineers always come up with the most prosaic, inartistic communication
protocols ;)
