"Limited to clumsy" is exactly right, except when a
bit of ruminating about what might be possible
sugggests that, perhaps it's something of an
understatement. That we consider it satisfactory at
all is because we have lived--those who have
survived--with it for so long. When one considers the
quality of life, safety, expense, and efficiency
factors, "barbarically inadequate" and "capriciously
suicidal" might gradually suggest themselves as more
apt.
Rather, let all the cars and and the traffic control
devices communicate with wireless, enabling start to
finish coordinated routing,
flow-distribution-to-capacity matching, flow
interweave management for speed, smoothness (almost
nonstop), and energy efficiency, and, top of the list,
accident avoidance by realtime millesecond monitoring
of and response to internal and external conditions.
Smart cars and smart highways. Lots of communication.
Way safe.
Clearly, implementation would be a gradual process.
Best, Jeff Davis
