I think game AI is a good intermediate step. Any AI project needs to have
testbeds that can be used to experiment with the system. Making them
compatible with games would produce a revenue stream. Game AI is a fairly
big market - there is a demand for it, and a general AI that does not have
to be specifically tuned for every game would likely be a big saving. It
would also get a lot of users, and if some feedback mechanisms of
experience was present the AI could actually act as a massive distributed
learning (or at least statistics collecting) system.
The day I think I have general intelligence in my neural networks I will
certainly try to apply them to gaming commercially.
