These visual atoms are often called `perceptual primitives'; I first met
them in THE HIDDEN ORDER OF ART, by Anton Ehrenzweig, about 30 years ago. I
think Steve Pinker might go on about them a bit in HOW THE MIND WORKS;
certainly he talks about Biederman's `geons', a related but different kind
of alleged visual primitive, in Chapter 4. Incredibly significant stuff
that's been repeatedly found & lost and overlooked for ages.
