This is exactly correct. In WWII, trainers found that the best anti-air
gunners were shotgun trained bird hunters, especially for gun positions
in bombers. Riflemen were only really useful for infantry.

I know one fellow who can regularly hit flying clay pigeons with his
AR-15 (admittedly low flying targets, to keep below the edge of the
berm, and shooting downhill as well), which I think might be a good
means of practicing for such a target....
