Net needs new core architecture — and now there are choices

Sept. 10 — Internet traffic carriers have plenty of difficult decisions to make, from deciding what services to offer to which technologies to deploy. Carriers are in a position to decide what the Internet will become. This is a huge departure from when the Internet exploded onto the scene. In fact, prior to 1998, the only Internet core router available was made by Cisco Systems. Now, the landscape is much different.
