I think the population may be slightly larger than NYC (but not double).
The critical point is that "its mostly desert" now. After nanotech
arrives, thats prime energy harvesting country. I hope you noticed
the recent biotech developments for growing tomatoes in salty water.
They aren't up to ocean salt level concentrations yet, but I expect they
will get there. It isn't particularly expensive to pipe the ocean inland.
If you think the Europeans are screaming about GMO crops now, wait until
Australia becomes a breadbasket equivalent to the U.S.
And yes, refusing to offload refuges shows how NIMBY the Australian
politicians are. Double shame.
