Well, anyplace that lets you smoke a doobie in public is to be
considered civilized in at least one respect. I have yet to find a
culture that is civilized in all respects in all places, though one
reason I toot the US horn is because of our 50 petri dish approach to
cultural experimentation, which allows for almost all sorts of
civilization to exist in at least one place or another.

Since I value my life highly, I do consider anyplace that would imprison
me for defending myself to be uncivilized in the most important respect.
While this eliminates most western countries that liberals consider to
be more civilized than the US, there are plenty of places in the US I
don't consider civilized for the same reason.
