I get the feeling that reasoned thought is going to have to wait while each of
the uninformed uses up his/her 15 minutes. While I was watching the debate in
the US House I got that deja vu back to about 1630 remembering the argument
between Galileo and the Pope. As I was feeling discouraged, thinking that we
have learned so little from history, one of the Representatives got up and
started talking about Galileo and the Pope. This made me feel a little better.
Here is my favorite quote from Galileo:
'To pretend that truth is so deeply hidden from us and that it is hard to
distinguish it from falsehood is quite preposterous: the truth remains hidden
only while we have nothing but false opinions and doubtful speculations; but
hardly has truth made its appearance than its light will dispel dark shadows."
