I do not think so. I thought the plot choice was just to bring in some
audience beyond the geeks who are going to show up to see the rendering
techniques no matter what the story. Neoluddites would have made the movie
with live actors, and fixed the root of all evil on the development of
technology.
The piece does have good visuals, as one would expect to see as techniques
make it out of the lab, to presentation at the ACM SIG GRAPH, and then finally
into a production a few years later. At the theater where I saw it, only two
of us sat through the legion of credits. I found the credits more interesting
than the story, but that was because I wanted to know the who and where behind
all the technology.
