Internet/Reputations/Singularities: Case in point

I found this article in the NY Times from July 15, 2001 very interesting:

Its a highly interesting examination of how a 15 year old boy
manages to become an "expert" in law on the Internet while
in competition against much more educated lawyers.

It begs the "repuation evaluation" system methodologies
in pointing out that you need a reputation evaluation
by the people being served as well as by the peers.
For example a "scientific reporter" may be highly praised
by his readership but highly critisized by scientists
who are experts on the material being reported.
Presumably there is some middle-ground where you are
appreciated both by the laypersons and elite experts.
