The news business is a fraudulent business if it distorts the news. It
purports to present accurate information. If it does not, it is fraud.
Likewise, HMOs are fraudulent business if they compromise patient safety for
money. They offer healthcare services to patients and insist that the
health of patients will not suffer. If it does, this is a fraudulent
business.
The bottom line may be an important goal for business, but it is not the
ultimate goal. If promises are made to customers, representations are made,
products are produced, then there are other contractual requirements which
must be met. Profits are desired if at all possible, but contractual
requirements must be met first. If a CEO breaks the law or breaks contracts
just to make more money, they are engaging in illegal and dishonest conduct.
In such a situation, they are not earning money, but are stealing it.
