This reminds me. I reviewed Maren's book back in 1997 in _Full Context_.

not online and the published review differed from the one I wrote. Call it
editorial fiat.
Maren's book used his experiences to survey the effects of foreign aid and
NGOs in East Africa, with close attention to Somalia. I recommend the book,
though it should read with a critical eye. Maren had an axe to grind with
the NGOs...
