IAN: I found and acquired another study on the effect
of mercury vapor on brain tubulin, which is what the
last study I posted was exploring and it found that
mercury vapor (Hg0) acted like Alzheimer's disease
(AD) at levels one could expect if you have many
"silver" amalgam fillings. That abstract is here:
Neurotoxicology 1997;18(2):315-24
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov:80/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9291481&dopt=Abstract
The new study, a review of studies, has no abstract
on-line, but I got it at the National Library o Meds.
Met Ions Biol Syst 1997;34:461-78

This study reports that mercury prechelated with EDTA,
EGTA, or glutamine "selectively abolishes tubulin-GTP
interactions in normal human brain tissues." Apparently
mercury can become chelated to glutamine in the brain.
Such diminished GTP interactions are a biomarker of AD
and is the same harmful effect found in the first study.
The study concludes: "The data found in the references
used in this presentation demonstrate that exposure to
mercury causes the same aberrancy in non-AD brain and
rat brain as observed in AD brain. These results do not
prove that mercury causes AD. They do strongly suggest
that exposure to mercury, and especially mercury vapor,
would exacerbate the condition clinically defined as AD.
Therefore, individuals with family histories indicating
a genetic predisposition toward AD should avoid any
exposure to mercury." I've never that important info
anywhere except as resulting from my PubMed searches.
One constantly finds info there you don't get elsewhere.
The American Dental Association continues to claim that
there is NO evidence of any risk associated with amalgam.
