Maybe the simulation is limited but not in terms of levels of resolution
(see above) or physical limits (e.g. the road coming to an end in the
Simulacron-3 story or the "grey formless mist" in The Unpleasant Profession
of Jonathan Hoag). How about the world just being simplified? Perhaps the
Real World has many more dimensions, more states of matter, extra physical
laws etc.
If the idea of the simulation is an experiment then most of the variables
may be fixed to just concentrate on one or two factors. If we are in a
simulation it might be just the tip of the iceberg compared to reality.
