Novel ‘seeds’ sprout new brain tissue
Discarded umbilical cords help repair damage after stroke
By Charlene Laino

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 18 — Within two years, Florida researchers plan to
embark on a novel experiment in which they will “re-seed” the damaged
brains of stroke victims. The seeds: stem cells — master cells that have
the ability to become any kind of cell in the body — taken from discarded
umbilical cords. The goal: to sprout healthy brain cells to replace faulty
ones, restoring normal function.
