[A quick sketch of an idea that's been percolating in my head for a while.]
With the rapid improvement in 3-D avatar generation (see www.ananova.com,
etc.), it seems like there might be a place for development of some standard
system of machine-readable annotation for human emotional expression. I
think of this as a system of "Emotional Mark-Up Language" or "EML". Such a
system, which could grow and evolve as HTML and VRML has, would be useful in
its first iterations and applications in translation and communication of
avatar affect.
Further development of EML could serve as a platform for common development
in other areas of "affective computing", such as a means for extracting and
manipulating the "output" of the current and coming generations of emergent
behavior in "emotive robotics". Ultimately, I see EML as a medium for
working in immersive VR interactive fiction.
Something like EML seems to be a necessary medium for the confluence of
emergent, holistic computational systems (like us) and the algorithmic,
digital world.
