Thanks for the pointer, Brian. The reduction they had to do to put it on
the web loses all the technique in the original.
I have a short article on my home page (http://discuss.foresight.org/~hibber
t/art.html) explaining how this kind of effect can be a good thing.
There's a middle school near my home at which the students have painted
mural reproductions of works by great masters. (La Grade Jatte might even
be there. I know there's some Seurat) The kids miss all the technique in
the originals, leaving you to contemplate the difference that makes a
difference on your own.
I haven't seen the original of La Grade Jatte, or even a good reproduction,
so I'll have to try to get to Chicago sometime.
