In addition, evolution is directed by self-organization and the physics of
molecular biology (organic chemistry). Complexity emerges, so I've heard,
from natural algorithms which play with genes like rock 'n' roll. Genetic
programming with A-life amounts to directed evolution of the intentional
human kind.
If there were no directed evolution, genetic engineers would have to
invent it.
