How about this:
The two "boxes" are eggs. They contain embryonic chicks, identical twins,
male, an older and younger brother. The key to any biological organism
(tautology?) could be said to be it's DNA; these eggs share that dna, and so
each contains the key to the other.
So how do you open each box? Keep them warm (in beds of scrunched up pages
from The Spike?), and the chicks will do the job for you.
I wonder... "and complete the task?"... what is the task?
