There is of course distinct survival value to being partnered and it is
particularly a survival benefit for any children that the couple
raises. So that should have created some bias for staying together.
But that bias is subject to change and to a lot of conditions. As
nearly 50% divorce statistics show.

There is less evidence that marrying for romantic love is wired into our
genes. Marrying on the basis of personal choice and romantic love seems
to be a relatively new development not prevalent in all cultures and
times.
