If these security procedures are indeed a temporary feature, how about
offering new subscribers the option of only receiving the list, but not
posting to the list?
This would enable newbies to see if the list really was of interest to them.
If not, they could unsubscribe without ever posting to the list.
After, say a month, newbies could be automatically moved to the 'trainee'
section of the list. For a further month, all postings received from
'trainee' members could be queued in a pending list where a moderator could
read their postings before forwarding them to the full list. Thereafter,
they would have full posting rights enabled.
As was pointed out, fully paid-up Extropy Institute members have already
supplied all their personal details when they signed up, so this discussion
does not apply to them. We are only talking about people whose new interest
we want to encourage, so care should be taken that they are not deliberately
discouraged.
Speaking for myself, the words of wisdom that I post are few indeed, but I
would really miss reading the ongoing saga of the adventures of Eliezer,
Mike, Brian, etc.
