I also have some doubts that "Whispering Gallery" actually referred to
the Gemini-B heat shield, as some other Web sites suggest. The footnotes
at the site pointed to by Greg imply something else. Maybe it was a
scheme for coordinating two OV platforms? Or am I falling prey to the
temptation to force code names into convenient conceptual boxes?

Have you seen http://www.fourmilab.to/documents/spaceguns/ ? According
to it, and based on info from the journal of the BIS, Almaz (the SU
counterpart to MOL) actually flew as Salyut 3 and Salyut 5, and they did
carry a rapid-rate cannon. This differs from the info on Almaz at
t'other site.
