I work in help desk technical support.
In defense of intellectuals everywhere, I get asked to impose my "fascist
schemes" on people every day, and they thank me for it.
"No, whenever you quit a Macintosh application you have to use the quit
option in the menu, otherwise you end up having no idea what is actually
running at any given moment."
Every day I hope and pray that my experience: that people have no ability or
even desire to think in terms of abstract patterns, is a result of selection
bias in the people I come in contact with ,and that the major users of tech
support services are a minority among computer owners.
Market research does not bear out my hopeful fantasy.
