The gains in machine tools is partly the result of more durable tools, but
mostly due to the emergence of high level CAM technologies, CNC machines, and
inexpensive prototyping systems. This results in fewer machine operations due to
more effencient machining techniques, better engineering that wastes fewer
materials and less energy. The only major difference between a 1970 milling
machine and a 2000 milling machine is the computer system that operates it.
