Questioning Genetic Engineering

An essay published in the San jose Mercury News (originally written for the
Washington Post) asks some questions abotu genetic engineering - and I think
provides a wonderful opportunity for Transhumanists and Extropians to show
that there ARE people who have considered these questions and have some
proposed solutions - or at least reasons why some of these things aren't the
problems they used to be.

I'd try to write a response on my own, but I know there are people out here
who are more lucid, more knowledgable, possessed of better credentials and
better spoken than I am.

There is a bit of concern over the "societal costs of longevity" and the idea
of a "National genetic Commission" modelled after the Atomic Energy Commission
- these may need to be nipped in the bud before the deathists get the upper
hand in this debate.
