Actually the latest and best-received theory I know of is that ball
lightning and other similiar things are actually a chemical reaction
produced by very thin strands of silicon. I read about it in New
Scientist several months back. They are still testing the theory, but
it seems to explain everything.
P.S. they are completely natural phenomena produced by lightning-
caused changes in the soil/ground.
