Time could be quite discontinuous (as seen from some other frame of
reference, say a "super time"). The whole universe could be frozen
while tinkering (if any) was done, and we'd be none the wiser.

Actually there was show on Australian TV when I was kid, "The Magic
Boomerang" (Damien may remember this). A boy could throw the
boomerang and then manipulate things while the rest of the world was
frozen. I wonder how he managed to plow his way through obstinately
frozen air molecules, and what he did to breathe! There was also an
episode with this them in "Twilight Zone", come to think of it.
