As with anything, it depends on how one uses it. One friend of mine travels
almost entirely. He is a major player biz exec and tech consultant. He
interacts with his son much more since the net... conferencing by video on
his birthday, etc.
I talk more to my cousins, who I never really got to know, up in Washington.
My mom has e-mail. I met my wonderful boyfriend online.
As Anders points out we *used* to be confined to interacting with people who
came within our physical sphere... now we can meet people based on their
*interests* and thoughts....
