Yes, as all long-timers know, I changed my surname ten years ago (right
about the time that piece was published), since I had no cultural
connection to Ireland (haven't even been there), disliked the connotations
it raised for me (religious warfare, economic and technological
backwardness--recently having changed drastically for the better), and I
wanted a name that reflected my values.
For the record.
Oh, and I should say that (like any piece of my earlier writing), I squirm
a bit to read it now, as I would do it differently and better.
