In response to Damien and Robert:
I actually did mean 'intersex' in the physical definition--
being born with nonstandard genitalia. I do, however,
like Robert's extension of that into the sociological realm,
to think of children as culturally 'intersex'....
As for intersex children representing a genetic 'failure', in
a few cases that is true, because some intersex states result
in life-threatening medical conditions. But, in most cases,
the person could go through life with variant biology.
Doctors and parents are under extreme pressure to normalize
those children, however, so that they can fit in.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Aegis
