Subject: Proven: 75% less shipping costs by downloadable product designs
To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004 at gmail.com>
Hi there Michel,
We keep pushing to show how 'downloadable design + localized making' is
going to work ...
>From today, personal factory owners can make and ship their product
designs from Milan, Italy (in addition to Wellington, San Francisco and
Berlin).
This means, for example, they can now ship items from the U.S. to Italy at
75% less cost than before.
Ponoko's online making system enables product designs to be transported over
the net, then made and shipped locally.
All the best, Derek

*Vectorealism launch opens Italy to Ponoko creators*
Milan-based fabber Vectorealism has launched a laser cutting and engraving
service using Ponoko – the world’s easiest making system. This gives Italian
creators access to local making and shipping rates through their online
Ponoko ‘personal factory’.
The development also opens up the Italian market for creators around the
world. Items can now be produced in Milan and shipped locally, reducing the
cost – and environmental impact – of long-distance shipping to Italy.
Vectorealism is the second digital making company to launch in Europe using
Ponoko’s making system. Berlin-based Formulor launched its making hub in
February this year. These services are in addition to Ponoko owned and
operated making hubs in San Francisco, California and Wellington, New
Zealand, and the emergence of more than 150 fabbers using Ponoko’s system
through 100kGarages.
Ponoko CEO David ten Have says the company is working with other digital
making service providers to add more making hubs around the world.
“It’s about making it easier to get things made, no matter where you, or
your customers, are in the world,” he says.
As well as providing online manufacturing services direct, he says, Ponoko
is expanding its role. “Our online making system connects all the players in
the making process. We’re connecting creators, fabricators, materials
suppliers and buyers of products in a way that makes it easy and affordable
for anyone to make almost anything.”
The benefit for fabricators like Vectorealism extends beyond accessing
pre-paid making jobs from Ponoko’s 25,000 creators.
“Ponoko streamlines the making process to make it easy and affordable for
creators and more profitable for boutique manufacturers,” says Vectorealism
GM Marco Bocola. “For example, Ponoko’s automated online quoting system
means creators get an instant price to make their product. Plus we don’t
need to factor time spent providing manual quotes into our pricing structure
so it keeps costs down.”
Creators can access Vectorealism services via their free personal factory at
Ponoko.com. They just select ‘Vectorealism – Italy’ as their making hub.
