Free/Open Source Software as a Commons
Free and open source software is one of the preeminent digital examples of
the commons, a paradigm for generating economic and social value outside of
the market. Although the commons is often regarded as an archaic,
inefficient mode of managing resources, FOSS and countless other digital
communities (Craigslist, Wikipedia, Flickr, Jamendo, etc.) are demonstrating
that decentralized cooperation can be highly productive and innovative.

This panel explores why the commons is such a robust paradigm for generating
value in several digital contexts -- software development, learning and
education, scientific research, scholarly publishing -- and why the commons
is politically and culturally significant.
