Subject: Yi-Tan Tech Community Call 264 - Building an Open Manufacturing
Ecosystem - 1:30pm EST, Monday January 25, 2010
To: Yi-Tan List <Yi-Tan at googlegroups.com>

  Greetings,

We've examined Fabbing<http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yi-tan/does_fab_herald_the_future_of_product_design>(in
July 2005!),
DIY <http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yi-tan/diy_everything> and DIY
craftshops<http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yi-tan/techshop_and_diy_innovation>.
We've also watched the launches of distributed design and manufacturing
shops like Ponoko <http://www.ponoko.com/>,
eMachineShop<http://www.emachineshop.com/>and
Adafruit <http://www.adafruit.com/>.

Now a group called OpenKollab <http://www.openkollab.com/> is asssembling a
number of participants in the space with a view to bringing them together
under an innovative funding structure, the Ecosystem Pooled
Fund<http://www.slideshare.net/sureshf/openkollab-pooled-fund>,
which takes a collaborative approach to funding early stage social ventures.

Really interested? Join their mailing
list<http://groups.google.com/group/openkollab>
.

The instigator of this ecosystem under development is Suresh
Fernando<http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yi-tan/Suresh_Fernando?wikiPageId=1662992>,
a former stockbroker and tech-company adviser who changed careers to explore
the power of open collaboration.

With Suresh, let's discuss:

   - What is OpenKollab's goal? Who is involved?
   - Why is the timing right for this funding structure? What problems does
   it solve?
   - How will OpenKollab's participants form a working network? What is an
   ecosystem?

As always, an IRC
Chat<http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/yi-tan/irc_chat?wikiPageId=163280>will
be available during the call,
here.
