Hi All!

Here's a wild one for you...

I was on a call with Josef Davies-Coates just now, learning a bit more about
his intentions with regard to bringing together the Cooperative Business /
Open Hardware / and Peer to Peer communities in the UK.

One of the things that came up was an idea to see a sort of metric across
the organizations. How can all the open businesses help each other succeed
on the path to a more commons-based world?

What about Peer to Peer evaluation? P2P Aid for developing and developed
business, from the network, to the network.

What sorts of things could be checked up on, within a business, that could
then create webs of interdependence and opportunity within our community?

Here's a few examples of what this might be, and I'd like to know your
thoughts, too!

Audits:

ITC Audit - Use of free/ Open tools, liabilities, Hardware Carbon Footprint,
10 year costing/maintenance plans

Oil/Hydrocarbon Audit - Dependance on fossil/non-renewable energy, carbon
footprint, reduction plan, rating for the type and size of business

Living Wage Audit - Connect with local resources for gauging effect of
consumer price index for housing, etc, on effective wages of employees

Commons Audit - How does your business increase the value of the commons?
What is the method, and how does it tie in to local needs?

Legal Audit - Is the business positioned for collaboration? Is it legally
in the clear for working with other coops or entities?

Teachable Audit - Are your processes documented? Have you shared the
hurdles you passed so that others can benefit from your experience? Are job
descriptions or work skills being taught as part of the organization's
mission?

Examples of Open Standards for use in Auditing:

Can we find more of these?

US Carbon Reduction suggestions:

I'm drawing a blank. Is all of the auditing standard proprietary? The
science is not. Where is the distillation? Consensus on action? I don't
expect of need the perfect answer, but isn't agreement on some of this
important?
