 Dear friends and colleagues,



Just when I thought I had arrived at my final destination in Rio de Janeiro,
I´m once again confronted with uncertainty. IUPERJ, the small, but vibrant
and prestigious research institute I´m working at is facing a serious
financial crisis. We are a public institution within a private university
that is bankrupt. Salaries haven´t been paid since October last year!  In a
last, somewhat desperate attempt to save our institute, we are asking the
federal government for assistance and the academic community for support.



We have written an Open letter, posted it on our web site and in less than a
week almost 3000 people have signed our petition and expressed their
support. I am asking you for your support as well.

If your institution would like to express its support for our effort to save
IUPERJ and agrees with the terms of the petition attached hereto, please
send an email to apoio at iuperj.br mentioning your institution and the name of
the petition signer representing it.

If you would also like to make a personal statement of support, follow this
link www.iuperj.br/abaixoassinado to our webpage. There you will find our
Open Letter (also attached hereto) and the online petition. Include your
signature by filling in the form (no personal information will be
disclosed).
