That's an important and insightful distinction of using something vs. having 
a related worldview, agreed.

More broadly, perhaps it also relates to who choose to shape environments 
and those who choose to live in them. For example Steve Jobs and others 
(indirectly Alan Kay) made the Macintosh what it is for whatever reasons 
they had, but many more people use Macintoshes for whatever reasons they 
have. Or one could say the same of GNU/Linux or the electric power network 
or whatever. Though, at some point, systems may wrap around on themselves, 
so, you use Macintoshes to design new Macintoshes, or GNU/Linux to blog 
about free software, or electric power to work on solar energy research.

But, you're also right that some people adopt these trends, and some people 
reject them or resist them (sometimes rightfully).

For example, here is yet another expose (from 1997) of what is wrong with 
the University system that we let shape our young lives:

Some resist that, some embrace that. People may even embrace it at one point

Still, as Chomsky suggests negatively in relation to universities, but which 
may apply positively to peer-to-peer and stigmergy: :-)

And so, the social pendulum swings back the other way...

So, we may see peer-to-peer be self-selecting somewhat in that sense in the 
long run. People who don't deeply believe in sharing will reject 
participating in Wikipedia or blogs or mailing lists, unless, as you 
suggest, they just see a need for it for other reasons (self-promotion, a 
desire to see a job well done, whatever). But, then, in the process of 
engaging with the peer-to-peer process for other reasons, their world views 
may slowly transform.

For example, consider the ironic cognitive dissonance of people who are 
posting to conservative news sites and related mailing lists in their free 
time but go on and on about the essential importance of free markets as 
essentially the only way to make the world a better place. Something has got 
to give on that eventually. :-)
