Many if not most informed experts would consider this person the greatest
living physicist.  The person is arguably the greatest living mathematician
as well based on their peer influences.

A widely published person, and an American, got their undergraduate degree
in history.  They studied a term in graduate economics before dropping out
(due to boredom) and then starting in theoretical physics as a graduate
student after considering a a career as a political journalist also working
briefly on the campaign of left presidential candidate George McGovern.
